FAQ

Why do potholes keep appearing in the same place -- the material just keeps coming out?

Repairing a pothole permanently requires "hot patch" material, the same material used to build a new road. The Street Department purchases hot patches from a couple of sources when it is available, but these plants shut down for the winter, and are not expected to open again until about the second week of April. During the winter months, potholes are patched using "cold mix", which is guaranteed to come out -- sometimes quickly when the weather is wet or the road is heavily traveled. Unfortunately, this is our only option while the asphalt plants are closed. When the plants open, all open potholes are addressed as quickly as possible, and then any potholes where the cold patch has not yet failed are dug out and replaced with a hot patch.

Does the City pick up brush, cut grass, or tree limbs?

The Street Department picks up brush and limbs once a week when we know about them. Call the office at 362-2477 to tell us where the brush is located. Limbs need to be at the curb on the tree lawn (please do not block the traffic lane). We do not pick up whole trees -- if you cut down a tree or contract for it you need to remove it yourself. Limbs and grass that fit into a regular container should be put in your regular trash.

What about Trash Pickup?

Trash Pickup for the City of La Porte is handled by contract with Recycle Track Systems. Trash pickup is once a week, at the curb. You can contact RTS with your questions at 833-787-1234, or check their website

Where can I dump yard waste and trees myself?

La Porte County maintains a dumping area for yard waste and trees FOR CITY AND COUNTY RESIDENTS ONLY on Zigler Road north of the La Porte County Fairgrounds.
